The Choir School is a preparatory school for day children and for boarders in a pleasant situation on the edge of Ripon. The aim is to provide a first-class education in small classes within a friendly community. About 50 children aged four and a half to eight are taught in four classes where they can receive close attention and a solid foundation, and take part in a wide range of activities. Three large new classrooms have recently been erected for younger children. The curriculum for the older children is a broad course which prepares them at 13 or earlier for the Common Entrance and Scholarship examinations to senior independent schools, takes into account the National Curriculum, and gives a firm basis for the General Certificate of Secondary Education. The average class size is 14. A large sports hall and extensive playing fields on site provide considerable opportunities for games and PE; team sports include cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis. Pupils are introduced to rugby, cross-country running and athletics. Swimming is taught and enjoyed in weekly sessions for all children. Music is exceptionally strong, but children who are not especially musical or interested in singing are welcome. Those who show special interest and ability in computing, art and design, chess and drama, are given extra help and tuition. Many scholarships and awards are won to a wide range of independent schools, and the Headmaster has considerable experience and expertise in helping parents select suitable schools for their children.
